Beneath the Surface

i have scars

like everybody else

some all over my skin

but also

the less obvious ones

invisible;

beneath the surface.

they’re in my mind,

and in my heart.

just because you can’t see them

does not mean

that they aren’t real,

or they aren’t valid.

what difference does it make

that my pain is internal

and cannot be detected

by your searching, calculating eyes

if you look closely though,

you’ll notice that

i want to be found

that’s the first step really:

acknowledgement

that i’m not okay

that i need help

and that i need not

be ashamed of it

or hide it

just because it’s frowned upon

so i say,

here’s to my mental health

over every damn thing

  1. This is really heart felt and beautiful! I can relate to this because many people around me tend to trivialize my mental health issues just because they aren’t visible… It’s ridiculous and I hope that people can start understanding how people who suffer from mental health issues feel. Thank you for this 🙂

    1. I feel the same way. And I hope we can all someday get past the taboo around mental illnesses and give them the same importance as any physical health issue. Thank you so much! Seeing that there are people who can relate to this makes me feel less alone. ❤
